“Every year the women of New York leave the past behind and look forward to the future……..this is known as New York Fashion Week.”, a popular quote by character Carrie Bradshaw from Sex In The City and a great depiction of NYFW. This fashion week I attended the Trina Turk and Mr. Turk presentation. While I have been a fan of Trina’s line for many years, I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Trina and find out a little more about the story behind her brand during her visit to Richmond in the spring at Saks Fifth Avenue Richmond in an interview I conducted for Richmond Magazine. Trina’s visit to Richmond included a fashion show, shopping, make up stations, and photo opportunities. Saks Richmond partnered with Trina to give a portion of sales back to our Valentine Richmond History center, specifically the costume and textiles collection. Based out of LA, Trina’s collections usually represent dynamic colors, bold patterns and signature prints that we often associate with the California lifestyle. Trina is just as dynamic, bright, and sophisticated as her collections. During her presentation in NYFW, attendees were able to get close to the models to view her recent collection and Trina and Mr.Turk were present in the crowd, which added to the excitement. I had a brief moment to catch up with Trina. Trina was very complimentary of her visit to Richmond and her line is sold in several stores around town.

I also met up with good friend, stylist and tailor, Patti Angus of Patti P Tailors in the Nicole Miller showroom NY for a special shopping excursion and showroom tour. Patti has held many trunk shows for Nicole Miller in Richmond. I had the pleasure of partnering with Patti for one of these trunk shows for Make a Wish Richmond. It was a fun and rewarding experience and since then it is always exciting to enjoy the New York Fashion Week experience in the Nicole Miller showroom. Besides shopping, we usually run into Nicole Miller herself as she is a hands on designer and you can almost always find her in her workroom hovered over a pattern or among the many bolts of fabrics and sewing machines. This year I met up with a great group of ladies from Richmond who purchased this special experience from a package donated by Patti at the World Pediatric Project auction and fashion show. Rounding out our trip we also enjoyed a special visit to Stuart Weitzman, Mood Fabrics, and Milk Studios.

While the east coast was covered in snow, inside the tents in New York there was no sign of anything but magical fantasies of worlds beyond and unknown. Enter the tents, or any show around New York, and you are transported into a world of fashion and glamour full of photographers, Celebrities, models, make up artists, stylists, editors, buyers, trend setters, trend reporters, bloggers, and sponsored lounges all the while being surrounded by national news reporters conducting interviews and reporting live on the latest trends and fashions of the future . It’s exciting! New York Fashion Week is one of the biggest platforms for fashion designers to showcase their collections and it is also a true collaboration involving event planners, production companies, models, make up artist, stylist, stage designers, musicians, jewelry and accessory designers, photographers, and so on. When you consider the amount of creative people it takes to pull off one show let alone an entire week of shows and presentations, you can begin to realize why New York Fashion Week is such a big deal. And, it’s not just the shows that are exciting, all around New York celebrations exist marking this great occasion.
New York Fashion Week: It’s exhilarating! It’s glamorous! It’s super creative and always fun!
Stay tuned this fall for New York’s September Fashion Week, available fashion tours and 2014 Saks Fifth Avenue Designer visits.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
